Verdict

We already feared to publish poor results but the Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS performed better than expected on the NEX 7 with its difficult 24 megapixel sensor. The lens is surely not remotely capable of exploiting the potential of this sensor but the results are generally decent - at least from a real world perspective. In the low to mid range the lens is very sharp in the image center and pretty good at the borders when stopping down a tiny bit. The center is generally a bit softer albeit still very usable at 210mm. The outer image regions are fairly weak at f/6.3 but decent at f/8. This is probably Okay given the typical applications at this setting where the center is usually the priority spot. The lateral CA are a bit higher than average so it's certainly advisable to activate the CA auto-correction in the camera. Same goes for vignetting which is also visible at max. aperture. The distortion characteristic is fine for a zoom lens. The produced bokeh (out-of-focus rendition) is a bit on the rough side which probably originates in the extensive use of aspherical elements in the lens' design.

Sony's OSS seems to be as efficient as the more established systems by Nikon and Canon. The AF is virtually silent and as such also very usable for shooting movies. A really nice aspect, and that's typical for all Sony E lenses so far, is the build quality. A kit tele lens with a body made of mag-alloy is pretty much unique and it's certainly a differentiator when comparing different systems in shops out there - a smart move by Sony for sure here.

The lens is a bit underdesigned for the use on the NEX 7 but it remains a relatively decent, attractively priced option. More so on lower resolution NEX bodies, of course.
