Verdict
The Tokina shows very solid optical performance. The center resolution reaches excellent levels with very good borders and corners. Distortion is practically absent and vignetting quite low. Chromatic aberrations and bokeh fringing are noticeable, but not excessive. Bokeh is not perfect, but still very good.
The build quality is on a very high level. However, due to the lack of a built-in motor and with its extending inner tube, the lens looks and feels outdated by today's standards, especially compared to the competing offerings from not only Nikon, but also Sigma and Tamron.
The Tokina's biggest selling point literally is its low price and thus price/performance ratio. However, even in this regard other's are catching up: at the time of the review, Sigma's 105mm f/2.8 OS lens retails for just 50 EUR more than the AT-X Pro, but provides a modern IF design, ultrasonic drive and optical stabilization.
