Verdict

The Nikkor AF-D 20mm f/2.8 is able to deliver very sharp images straight from its largest aperture. Stopped down to f/5.6 the sharpness is on a very high level across the whole FX image.

Optically however it is not without flaws. Vignetting is on a rather high level, especially for larger apertures. CAs are also quite pronounced, however they are easy to correct in post processing.

Nonetheless, the lens is quite compact and leight-weight. So, compared to optically better lenses (like the Nikkor AF-S 14-24 wide angle zoom or the manual focus Zeiss ZF 21/2.8) it may still be the more attractive option for those who want to travel light. Especially since it's also quite a bit more affordable.
