Verdict

The Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX II is a well performing wide-angle zoom lens. Sharpness is excellent at the image center, except for the long end of the zoom range. At both ends of the zoom range, 12mm and 24mm, the corners are a little weak and the lens needs to be stopped down to f/8 to achieve very good resolution across the whole frame.

Distortion is quite pronounced at the shortest focal length, but is reduced to a moderate or even unnoticeable level by zooming in. Vignetting is only an issue at 12mm and the maximum aperture setting.

The build quality of the lens is excellent. Thanks to an integrated DC motor the lens is fully compatible with all current Nikon DSLRs.

The lens' biggest issue are quite high CA values. And even though Tokina added a new coating, the lens still is more prone to flare than the competition.

So, in summary: affordable, well built, decent performance, but not without flaws.
