VerdictThe Olympus Digital M.Zuiko 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R may be an unexciting lens for advanced users but many newbies start their journey with the Olympus system just right here. The optical quality isn't absolutely stunning but it is no slouch either. The results are pretty sharp from the wide end till the middle range whereas the quality at the long end could be a little better. Distortions and vignetting are auto-corrected so there is little to worry about from a user perspective here - the underlying native characteristic is quite a bit worse though. The lateral CAs are too high at fully open aperture but not much of an issue when closing the aperture by a stop or two.
The build quality is surprisingly high for such an affordable kit zoom lens. It may have an all plastic shell but it is tightly assembled with smooth control rings. The AF is fast and virtually silent. To summarize - a decent offering that will not break the bank.
