Verdict
The Sigma AF 24-35mm is a marvellous lens and delivers some great results. Image sharpness is excellent in the image center at all tested focal lengths and apertures. In addition, throughout most of the zoom resolution is excellent across the whole frame when stopped down a little.
Vignetting is, as to be expected with such a fast lens, pronounced wide open, but not much of an issue stopped down. CAs are well controlled. Distortion is quite obvious at 24mm, but fairly moderate at longer focal lengths. The bokeh is surprisingly smooth for a wide-angle lens.
Build quality is on a very high level, except for the lens hood. Thanks to a HSM drive, the autofocus is virtually silent and quite fast.
So, in summary, a very impressive lens that deserves a very high rating and our "Highly recommended" verdict.
One question is difficult to answer, though: is this really a good and complete replacement for a set of primes? Well, it certainly delivers prime quality, but on the other hand it's fairly big and heavy. So, it is able to replace a set of primes in terms of quality, yes, but with primes you can choose to focus on just one of them occasionally and go light. It comes down to personal preferences in the end, but if you care about quality, the Sigma is definitely worth a closer look for sure.
