Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR (Fujfilm) - Review / Test - Analysis
Lens Reviews - Fujifilm X

Distortion

The Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR has two souls in terms of distortions. Fujifilm uses an auto-correction system thus you won't really notice any distortions unless you switch it off (e.g. in CaptureOne).

The original distortion characteristic is worse than that though. A barrel distortion of 4.1% is heavy for a prime lens.

Vignetting

A similar statement applies to the vignetting characteristic. The auto-correction handles most of the issue thus you won't have any issues to shoot even at f/2 (other than increase corner noise). However, the original vignetting is very high (1.9EV) at f/2 and still very noticeable at f/2.8.

MTF (resolution)

The Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR delivers a good albeit not outstanding performance. The center quality is already excellent at f/2 and the outer image region reaches good figures here. The quality increases the further you stop down with a peak at f/5.6. The final kick in crispness is missing in the extreme corners but the borders are impressive. Diffraction reduces the quality from here on but the results are still very good at f/11.

The centering quality of tested sample was Okay (slight softening on the far right side).

Please note that the MTF results are not directly comparable across the different systems!

Below is a simplified summary of the formal findings. The chart shows line widths per picture height (LW/PH) which can be taken as a measure for sharpness. If you want to know more about the MTF50 figures you may check out the corresponding Imatest Explanations

Chromatic Aberrations (CAs)

The lateral CAs (color shadows at hard contrast transitions) are very low with an average pixel width around 0.2px at the image borders. This is negligible.

Bokeh

The Fujinon is moderately fast relative to its focal length. In order to achieve a shallow depth-of-field you have to chose a relatively short focus distance. When doing so the quality of the bokeh (out-of-focus blur) is pretty good.

Out-of-focus highlights are fairly nicely rendered at f/2. The inner disc isn't totally "clean" but there's virtually no outlining. The highlight discs deteriorate to cat's eyes towards the corners. Stopping down creates an edgy aperture shape from f/2.8 onward which is a little unfortunate really.

The quality of the general blur is very smooth towards the image background (to the left below) and somewhat more busy in the less critical image foreground (right).

Bokeh Fringing

Bokeh fringing is an axial color fringing effect. It can show up as purple halos in front of the focus point and greenish halos in the background. Like most of large aperture lenses the Fujinon is also affected with some visible fringing at f/2. Stopping down reduces the issue but traces remain even at f/4.
