Nikon F601 / N6006

ProGreat camera with all the features that you really need to be creative. The shutter has a loud solid reasuring clunk when used and has solid feel about it.
ContraBatteries can be expensive and loose power as temperature gets lower....always handy to carry a spare. Shame Nikon did'nt make a AA battery pack...
ThoughtsReliable camera....mine has lasted for 16 years and going strong. The autofocus is'nt exactly quick and can go hunting...I have now obtained an F100; so the F601 is now my backup camera!!

ProThis a fabulous camera! Knocks spots off Dslr's up to 400asa!
You dont need the handbook. If you do, you are out of your depth and should have bought a disposable.
ContraAbsolutely nothing. Nikon got everything right.

The battery is available in Boots for Ģ12. Lasts me around 2-3 years.
ThoughtsResults are always magnificent. My 3rd Nikon, FT2 and F301 previously. Have 35070 and 70210 Af Nikkors - superb!

Dont go digital, use an F601 and scan it in .

ProSolid, well-made, ergonomically wonderful. Every button seems to be right where it's needed. Extremely well balanced it has a nice heft. Nikon designed this camera to last. Can use AF and MF lenses. I've shot some outstanding florals on film with a 55mm micro-nikkor attached. Large bright viewfinder. Ridiculously cheap today and even more so if you find one that needs the back latch replaced. Nice on board flash. Great backup for your Dslr on those photo treks.
ContraAll the usual already mentioned, slow AF, unreliable battery usage shown in LCD so carry a SPARE! No MLU or DOF preview. This camera suffered from a fatal design flaw that rendered it useless. The latch for the film back is a plastic tab that easily breaks, I've seen 100's on ebay as fixers. There is a $10.00 part from Nikon and others that can permanently repair this flaw with a metal latch but you need to be pretty handy to do it. I've done a few and it's a quick fix. Check one out, you'll be happy.
ThoughtsMy first Nikon AF. I immediately began to get better results than what I had been doing previously. Went to AF and never looked back.
Hard to go from a metal to mostly plastic camera like this one but I would say the quality is on par with all the other Nikons from this era.

ProReliable camera which can deliver stunning results. I've owned one since 1991. Body ergonomics are great, and body weighted quite nicely....unlike the plastic fantastics of today.
ContraAutofocus speed is slow and noisey. Flash shutter speed is 125th, not 250th like higher spec camera's.
ThoughtsThink of the F601 as a slightly junior version of the 801. The only feature it lacks is a depth of field button; besides that, if you work within it's capabilities....you will produce very good photo's time after time.

ProReliable, good workhorse. Metering good, accepts wide range of lenses,
ContraShutter sounds like a gun going off!
ThoughtsI've had my 601 since they came out in 1991. God only knows how many rools of film have passed through it in all those years. It has NEVER let me down. I now have an F80 and I don't trust it half as much. Nikons midrange cameras certainly aren't built like they used to be. If you can find one of these, buy it, second hand prices are silly.

ProVery solid, easy to understand and to use, metering modes including spot meter, lies good in your hands (great ergonomics and weight)
ContraNo depth of field preview, no mirror lock up, noisy and slow AF, expensive and uncommon battery
ThoughtsIf you have gathered your first experience with manual focus bodies and are used to think in terms of shutter speed, aperture and film when you are going to take a picture then this camera will be a very good choice when deciding to buy an unexpensive autofocus body. I wear glasses and switched from an OM 2S to this camera after testing it for a few months. It is a "honest" camera. No pictograms or strange buttons where you wonder what they could be good for. I felt comfy with it in a really short time and have had good results right from the start. It makes reliably high quality pictures and offers you full control on all aspects of taking the picture. However it is not a recommendable body if you should decide to go into macro photography for the lack of the depth of field button and the missing possibility of mirror prefire. I highly recommend this camera as a day in day out and travel camera for being solid, reliable and easy to use. A nice and only a bit more expensive alternative for those who like to do also some macro work is the 801S (8008s) which starts to be a real bargain on the second hand market.

ProThis camera is one of the only Nikon's that can use both manual and AF lenses. Has a good feel when you hold it (also very tough camera). Easy to access buttons for shutter speed and other options. Clever design of this camera will put a smile on your face. Also I like how it Allows you to use the cheaper "cable release" instead of the more expensive ones that most camera's nowadays require. Some people may think that the model above this one, the Nikon f801 (N8008 in USA) is a better model, but I disagree..The f601 (N6006) offers almost every feature the f801 has and at a better $ value. Plus the f601 even has a built in flash.
ContraYes this camera is a bit noisy, but doesn't really bother me while shooting. (What's really noisy is hearing it when it automatically rewinds your film. It's scary.) But besides that, a great camera overall.
ThoughtsReally enjoy using this camera (despite it being noisy.. but hey, I'm not one of those shy photographers who hide behind everyone, trying to stay quiet. he-he. I always try to get the shot no matter what). I do a lot of photojournalistic work, and this camera has always proved to be reliable. I've also used it for weddings, but would only recommend it during the reception (too noisy for ceremony). If you are wanting a good Nikon at an affordable price this is the one. Again, it being able to use the older and newer AF lenses allows you to really build up a much greater collection of lenses.

ProGreat features, rugged build and reliable.
Very beautiful, I love its looks.
ContraWhat a shame this camera is so noisy, because otherwise it would be a perfect camera.
And yes, (unfortunately I have to be honest) the autofocus isn't that good, but who needs it anyway?
I don't mis mirror-lock and I think this feature hardly serves any real purpose, perhaps only those who like to investigate their pictures on sharpness by looking through a microscope.
ThoughtsNice feel in hand. Well balanced. luxury feel that doesn't (fully) dissapear when the camera is making noise while taking a shot.
Most people like the noise this camera makes, it reminds them of scenes in movies and is generally associated with the press (even though most press camera's nowadays are near-silent.)
It's beaut!

ProGreat camera and great features, esp. the many things the flash can do.
ContraAF hunts like crazy. No DOF preview. No battery indicator. The little latch on back breaks easily.

ProAll photoes taken to date very good
ContraNo battery indicator for low
ThoughtsThe F601 is a fine camera that stood me in good stead for 8 or 9 years before my two-year-old dropped it and broke the back enough that repairs weren't worth the expense. So I just found another one (this time with a date back) second-hand, in better shape than my old one had been. My original one helped me take good enough photos that I was asked to photograph weddings and company events just on the basis of old pictures people saw. Easy to use, capable, and intuitive if, like me, you prefer old-style dial controls over newer-style buttons. The fill flash is surprisingly capable. Heavy (cf. comparable Canons etc.), but I like the heft, and the drive, focus, and mirror can be a tad noisy, but nothing to complain about. e-mail : [email protected]

ProNice strong feeling camera. Many useful functions, I find the matrix metering VERY useful. This has saved my bacon a couple of times.
ContraLoud shutter!!!
ThoughtsI have only recently purchased my F601, and I am indead VERY impressed with it. I have the Jappenese made unit, so I suppose I am lucky...I actually swapped it for a Fuji Digital Camera...I think I was the winner. I aslo received 1 x 50mm Nikon, 1 x 105mm Nikon, and a 70 - 210 AF Nikon...in the deal.

ProEasy to use & very funtional.
ContraNo x-sync Flash connection for Studio light
ThoughtsJust used it 1 month ago for wedding. Used a CT-4 with omni bounce. Reults were great. My email : [email protected]

ProReliable
Easy-to-use plus flexible
Built in flash really quite decent (N6006)
ContraAuto-focus really suffers in low light
ThoughtsI've had mine for about 11 years. At some points have used it a lot and at others rarely. Recently, got back to using it. Really a straight-forward, hard working camera that does a nice job of everything. I cannot deny that I'm getting tempted to upgrade to something a bit more advanced and pass this down to my brother ... but I always seem to put it off because this works so well. If you're looking for a nice base Nikon, though, you can't go wrong with a used one of these.

Proreliable. many useful features. cheap.(secondhand)
ContraAF doesn't function properly. Lack of preview button
ThoughtsI use my 601 for over 10 years now and it has never disappointed me. It's a very dependable and rugged camera. Think it's on of the most underrated nikon cameras. Operation is easy. Especially great for landscape photography. Many times I take photographs at sea, with sand coming everywhere, but good old 601 takes it all. An omission is the lack of a preview button. Also AF is not good. It's best used with manual focus lenses. A minor default is the 125 sync. All in all well worth every gulden or dollar or pound of it.

ProVery good build quality,a lot of futures ,very robust camera a low price, excellent as a back up or beginners, easy to use.
ContraSlow AF,noisy.No vertical grip.
ThoughtsI bought my f601 accidently 1 year ago.It is a perfect camera for beginners, very cheap nowadays (Iīve paid 250 $ for new one incl.28-80 Tamron). It uses expensive batteries,i wonder why NIKON didnīt do any vertical grip for that gem (and for others low budget models), like a Canon do.That combination would be perfect.Camera is built like a typical Nikon (donīt hit your girlfriend with it,you may kill poor woman:).I miss better AF system when I shoot totally drunk at partys.Images are great anyway.Have a nice shoot :)))

ProSpot meter, AF accurate for stationary objects, difficult to confuse. Feature rich, reliable, accepts wide range of Nikon lenses, has a nice user interface. Mechanical remote release. Very comfortable to use under full manual or aperture priority modes.
ContraAF is very bad with moving objects. No interchangeable focusing screens. No MLU. Expensive batteries. No special backs. Loud. No auto-zoom with motorized flashes.
ThoughtsFor the price range and segment this camera was aimed at it was/is excellent. The AF is much more accurate than is given credit for, but suffers from a weak motor. Easy lenses focus fast, heavy ones don't.

ProMost definately so
ContraNone so far
ThoughtsI bought a F601 in South Africa earlier this year for R1000 or about Ģ100 second hand.Previous to this I had been using N4004(with which I achieved good results and which has now been passed down to my wife).Since using the F601 I can honestly say the results have been terrific and if anything my photography is progressing in leaps and bounds. Have recently started experimenting with the bracketing system and have had good comparible results. I like the robustness and the reassuring weight of it. I believe the light meters are quite superior to the N4004 as has been shown by the results. From my side it comes highly reconmended.

Prolove it - does everything except the dishes. I have a Nikkormat and loved that so much that I wanted to duplicate its manual flexibility at the same time I took advantage of AF and AE features. 6006 lets you exercise as much or as little control as you want over the picture as you want. If you don't have time to compose, it takes perfect pictures with the FA and AE features.
Contranon that I know of

ProLots of features: C/W, Matrix and spot meters, flash functions built in, auto bracketing, exposure compensation, DX override, standard cabņe release.
ContraNoisy, slow AF compared to modern AF bodies, no AA battery pack
ThoughtsWouldn't hesitate to buy another one if it gets stolen. It's the perfect camera for the dedicated amateur, it gives you anything you would want in a camera at a very low price. I highly recommend it.

ThoughtsRecently, i bought a F-60 Camera from Milan. The results are terrific except for one small thing that i can't figure out. At times, after assembling the Body and the lense, it keeps on blinking with a "fEE". I see lot many people facing the same problem. Please do let me know how to troubleshoot this problem.
Write me at [email protected]. I'll be very obliged.

ThoughtsI own a 6006 and an N90, and for the money the N6006 is a great camera. I am a semi pro photog, and my fiancee is getting into photography herself. I paid a whopping $200 for my first N6006 body at a pawn shop. It was a GREAT camera to learn on, and it took great pics to boot. I traded it in (and got $200 for it in trade!!) when I got my N90. I regretted getting rid of the N6006 so I hunted around and found another in a pawn shop for $125. If you are looking for them I strongly suggest checking pawn shops. They are quite plentiful and if you are lucky (like I have been TWICE!!) you can get them for next to nothing!!

ThoughtsThe 601 is a very capable camera, it has never let me down, but I rarely use it, because it is so heavy and bulky with my 28-85 lens. I like many became caught up with AF, multi mode cameras in the early nineties, but today I prefer to use my FM2, its more fun and I believe takes better shots. What can be said though is that when it comes to value for money, the F601 is a winner.

ThoughtsI bought a 601 QD (Quartz Date) as an ever-ready camera for use with color negative film (usually, I love Fuji slide films) to get pictures for my websites. The price/performance ratio is excellent (I found one second-hand for 290.- Swiss Franken), the built-in flash won't change the world of photography, but it's nice for a portait fill, and the built-in bracketing is extraordinary for a camera in this price-range. I do, however, miss the DOF preview.

ThoughtsWas tempted to purchase a F70 but found them far too fiddly to use (if you want to be in control that is). The new 'knobs and dials' cameras (the retro ones) were appealing for there ease of use but for the the price the 601 is robust, simple to use has good features and the great Nikon lenses fit on the front. A good buy I think.
