ProSolid (took a MASSIVE fall once, took some damage, but fixed itself after a roll)
Easy to use
Very capable (For example, being able to shoot 1/8000 and up helps with some of the stuff I take)
Very long battery life (lithium ion battery, been using the same one since I bought it (too many rolls to count)
INCREDIBLY fast (with eye-start I can pick the thing up and take a photo in half a second)
Produces INSANELY good results (Its metering system is amazing)
Control scheme makes it easy to change shooting parameters quickly
ContraNo normal hotshoe without an adapter!
The weight gets to me sometimes
The AF jumps a bit in high-contrast areas
Not much else!
ThoughtsAn excellent camera! I upgraded from a Maxxum 9000, and don't regret it one bit. It's also fairly affordable nowadays. A good camera for anyone from an amateur to all but the most serious of professionals.

ProThe most wonderful 35mm camera slr ever made. It's styling was inspired, its ease of use, or conversley it's versatility. The smooth shutter and high speed flash. its innovations In my view better not just than other minolta cameras, but better than any other make as well.I found it hard to make a bad exposure.
ContraPerhaps if anything was wrong with the whole dynax maxxum series up to the 9xi was the use of function cards. Never liked them at all.
ThoughtsFantastic. I have to say this, I can't understand why minolta cameras were not received better by the professionals. I have a friend who takes pictures of basketball, she had a great minolta camera and lens set up, and was told if she wanted to get anywhere she had better get a Canon or Nikon, senseless to me.

ProPro feel, very solid, first class touch, simplicity of operation with the 'func' thumb button, nice and sure grip, its heaviness makes it more stable, beautiful design
, very complete-all essentials functions are there.
ContraNone that cant be overcome.
ThoughtsThis is the best camera ever made by Minolta. Of course, there's the Dynax 9, but the 9xi is so attaching, its rounded design makes it look so cool.
With such a camera, you can ignore what's coming out in the digital world. Its the feeling that counts. With 9xi, you got such a great feeling.

ProFantastic handling, built to last forever, easy to use, very reliable.
ContraNothing major at all
ThoughtsIn my view, the 9xi is simply Minolta's best ever camera, which has never really had the recognition it so rightly deserves

Provery accurate, heavy-duty camera with a perfect handling (few knobs).
I will never change this camera to another one. It seems that this camera came 10 years to early on the market. This design as a digital-camera it would be a perfect camera.
Contrasome features you need today as HSS-flash-technique or flash compensation are not available
Thoughtsmy opinion: it is the best camera Minolta ever built

ProHAVING USED THE 7000i, 8000i AND NOW THE 9Xi IS SIMPLY OUTSTANDING!WEATHER RESISTENT BODY. NO MORE OF THE TOGGLE UP/DOWN BUTTONS OF IT'S PREDICESSORS, THIS IS JUST PLAIN A FINE CAMERA AND UP TO ALL I EXPECT OF IT AND MORE. ON THE USED MARKET THESE ARE A BARGAIN AND CAN BE FOUND IN EXCELLENT TO NEW CONDITION FOR A FRACTION OF THE PRICE OF THE LATEST MODEL.
ContraNONE
ThoughtsOUTSTANDING PERFORMERS - I HAVE TWO OF THESE WITH MANY MINOLTA LENSES AND WORK GREAT FOR MY SCENICS!

ProNice, solid, professional feel to camera. Good heft, and shutter clicks off with authority. Bulletproof. Good set of features.
ContraHow do you get around the lack of flash compensation? Is there a way? Cannot use new wireless infrared flash features of newer Maxxum flashes without getting dedicated transmitter. No on-camera flash.
ThoughtsI like the camera, but there are some important changes with new cameras that are hard to pass up: wireless HSS flash technology, on-camera flash, brighter viewfinders, midroll film change, better vertical grip options.

ProBuilt like a tank. Fast autofocus, great metering. Sealed against the elements a plus in West Texas!
ContraNo flash compensation, no interchangeable focusing screens.
ThoughtsIf anyone knows how I can upgrade the focusing screen, please drop me an email at [email protected] Thank you.

ProJust shot 20 rolls of film with my new (used) 9xi and like it so well bought a 2nd. Gave my 9000 to my son for his first camera.

ThoughtsThis is the camera I've been looking for!

ProErgonomics, solid well built, excellent metering system, fast sync speed of 1/300sec., full information viewfinder, quick exposure override even in program mode, electronic depth of field preview button, customizable quick button for your most used explosure settings. Excellent flash modes with dedicated units. Heavy but extremely well balanced.
ContraExpansion computer chip cards. Expensive lithium batteries. Battery pack BP-9xi for using AA cells almost impossible to find in the used market.
ThoughtsJust a great camera. Easy to use once you learn its many features. Built in flash would've been nice for occasional fill flash - I'm always carrying the small 2000xi flash with the 9xi. It's an old technology compared to the new Maxxum 7 and 9s. But for less than half the price of the new Maxxums - the 9xi packs more features than I'll ever need or use. It's a great camera.

ProI own 2 9xi's. Some months ago I bought a Maxxum 7, for no urgent reason. While the 7 is a wonderful camera, I find myself going back to the 9xi often on my shoots. I much prefer its solid feel, plus its superior ergonomics.
ContraCan't think of any!

ProHard building, reliable, excellent metering, handling, performance, AF accuracy, very few buttons (no pbm with sand)
ContraViewfinder (92%, and too dark : difficult to use in very low light conditions)
ThoughtsMy camera has felt down several times, and has been used under bad weather. I got zero problem. AF accuracy is excellent, so is handling (with one hand, one can have access to main functions). Matrix metering is very reliable and spot metering can be used very easily to make a quick comparaison in difficult lightning conditions before shooting.

ProAF is reasonably fast and not too important for my landscape pictures. The camera is very solid. The matrix and spot metering are very good.
Contra-
ThoughtsIt is comfortable and easy to use I really do like it. The minolta dynax 9xi has an excellent body that is highly ergonomic

ProBuild, specification, handling.
ContraNecessity of the use of cards to customize bracketing.
ThoughtsA fabulous camera with an excellent construction, a complete specification ( including records in shutter speed and flash sync speed ), a great viefinder, fast focusing and precise metering and excellent handling (including the unique quick button).Better than the more recent Dynax 9.

ProA bit oudated pro level camera at a price of a mid level modern one. Very solid. Very good handling. Very fast AF. Very accurate metering. Very good wireless flash control. Some cards are the unique offers.
ContraAll CFs are in the card. No (fast & simple) flash exposure compensation. No vertical grip. No high speed an 2nd curtain flash sync.
ThoughtsAs for me - the absolutly best camera for an advanced amateur or a profi on a budget. I owned Canons and used Nikons and Pentaxes. But I chose 9xi as my camera and I never regret.

ProExcelent camera for the money great value, all professional build and years ahead for it's time.
ContraLack of status against overpriced canons and nikons
Thoughtssuper specs and interraction with pro glass like an 85 mm 1.4

ThoughtsThis camera is like an EOS 1 but faster. I love my camera. Once I dropped in a lake, 10 hours later the camera worked.

With some expansion modules you can get everything you want in a camera!

ThoughtsI've used the 9xi practically since the camera came out, and have had zero problems with it. In terms of performance, control layout and handling, as well as reliability/durability, I've literally found none better (I've even passed on upgrading to the 9, which is in some ways a worthy successor to the 9xi, but for me is a bit larger and heavier than I'd like, and I much prefer the 9xi's controls). I've had numerous capable cameras (first-generation Canon F-1, and various F-series Nikons, among a few others), yet I've had little reason to look back.

ThoughtsAF is reasonably fast and not too important for my landscape pictures. The matrix and spot metering are very good. I like to use the program shifts. The camera is very solid. It felt down with my support and it got not even a dent. It is immune to the sannd of the deserts. Some of the controls are inconvenient.

Pro-
Contra-
ThoughtsBought mine second hand for D9 backup. Contrast in design philosoophies. Solid build, AF almost as fast as the 9, and in fact has less of the microhunting that 9 is susceptible to. Metering is excellent, on par, only miss the 100% viewfinder, mirror lockup and flash exp comp occasionally. IMHO, 9xi is actually a faster handler than the 9 for 90% of the shots I take. I find myself reaching for it for the majority of my phototaking, and the 9 if I am doing deliberate stuff, like architecture.

Pro-
Contra-
ThoughtsSolid and reliable. Good feel. Very accurate metering system. Drawbacks are the 92% viewfinder, lack of mirror lockup, lack of second curtain sync, lack of a simple flash exposure compensation system.

ThoughtsEXCELLENT CAMERA ,I MOSTLY DO HARD NEWS AND CONFLICTS SO THE CAMERA SHOULD BE GOOD AND RELIABLE.I CAME FROM NIKON (MORE HEAVY) BUT NOT MORE RELIABLE. LIGHTNING IS VERY GOOD ALSO WITH FLASH. AND FOCUSSING IS MORE ACCURATE THAN THE NIKON F4. ONLY THING ICAN SAY IS THE TOO MANY HIDDEN FUNCTIONS WITH LITTLE BUTTONS,I PREFER THE BIGGER ONES(THEY SOLVED THIS WITH THE NEW DYNAX 9).
