| Pro | I might have been a bit hasty and harsh in my article of Dec. 1st, 2005. Meanwhile I have grown to like the sheer simplicity of this camera. |
| Contra | see my article of Dec. 1st, 2005. |
| Thoughts | The camera is simple. Which is not only a bad thing. |

| Pro | light |
| Contra | Always AI-Focus on, even with the creative modes!!!
Counts photos backwards (I know, it's supposed to be a feature, not a bug, but I would prefer the chronological order).
No shake-warning in the creative modes.
No CF-Functions.
Loud. |
| Thoughts | The fact that you can't select the AF-mode means that this is not a real SLR-camera, but a toy. Sorry. |

| Pro | I just bought a secondhand one and the thing I like about it is that is so light. I just read the other reviews and I always ask myself what people mean if they talk about a camera for beginners. From the moment on that you have full control over the settings (diafragm and shutter) you can be as creative as you like. I would like to know which features make out a real professional camera? The price? As to the plastic, I have been told that the plastic used in this camera is stronger than the old steel constructions and it protects the interior better because it bends rather than breaks or shocks heavily. |
| Contra | Nothing untill sofar. |
| Thoughts | I hope to use it for a long time. |

| Pro | Lightweight but strong enough, i use it since 1998, never had a problem. Now i use with a Canon 70-200 f4, autofocus works even with a Kenko 2x teleconvereter, that's incredible!! |
| Contra | No flash exp compens., no spot metering |
| Thoughts | Economic, lightweight very good camera, i use it with big satisfactions |

| Pro | Cheap, light weight, reliable (also in terms of exposure, and AF). |
| Contra | No DOF-preview, plastic lens-mount, no spot-metering, to small to hold steady w/o battery grip (for most hands anyway), AF-assist light very bright (persons will blink). |
| Thoughts | When using it with a macro lens in close-focus in complete darkness I use the much hated AF-assist-light in red-eye-reduction-mode to light my object (manual focus). If you plan to seriously enter SLR-photography, this model does not have enough features for you. Buy the 50E instead. |

| Pro | Great camera for beginners. Sure, a lot of people complain about all the latest features this camera doesn't offer...but then again, anyone who is serious enough to aquire an SLR as opposed to a point and shoot should find it fun to learn about apertures and exposures without letting the machine do all the work. |
| Contra | For the beginner, none whatsoever as long as they remember that great photos are taken with (in reverse order of importance) the body, then the lens, then your eye. |
| Thoughts | I read a lot of bum reviews about how this camera is so plastic and all that. But what we have to remember is that there are hundreds and thousands of different kinds of plastic. This is canon produced plastic designed to build cameras with. This is not tupperware plastic. Of course the plastic build can never be compared with the everything-proof 1V, but I still think the plastic 500N is a great place for beginners to start their photo journey. |

| Pro | Reliable, cheap and very rich of functions.
AF and red eyes reduction lamp (not flash!).
Small, light and ergonomic. |
| Contra | Motor and exposure mode can't be manually selected.
No flash compensation.
No depth of field preview.
Slow x-sync. |
| Thoughts | Once, the greatest camera in its category. |

| Pro | I love this camera, I have had it for years nad would reccomend it to anyone starting out. |
| Contra | No complaints for what it is and what it cost. More importantly what it has allowed me to achieve. |
| Thoughts | Does anyone know how to get hold of a manual for the 500n, maybe in PDF format? |

| Pro | Very light weight and easy to handle. The features are excelllent for its worth.I would recomend it to beginners since I started off on it and it has never let me down. EXCELLENT |
| Contra | Plastic used in its construction, so you have to be a little careful in using it.
It does not have a PC Socket which makes it difficult to shoot in a a studio. |
| Thoughts | Very light weight. Good buy for money and excellent for beginners and amateurs. |

| Pro | VERY Light-weight (i get HEAPS of compliments on this feature), logical & straight forward operation, Solid AF, no frills, Nothing short of SUPERB for beginners and even serious amateurs, RELIABLE. |
| Contra | AF Strobe light can be a pain in low light conditions, 1fps is slow when shooting fast-movement, no DOF Preview (if you want that, get the EOS 300), 6-segment metering is 95% fine except for those few high-contrast shots (when u have a sunset against an 'almost' dark foreground) |
| Thoughts | This was my first SLR camera; so i have grown with this camera from a novice to a serious amateur photographer. The camera has proved itself in every condition and situation. I have shot 70+ rolls with it, from portraits to landscapes in all weather/lighting conditions. The camera has never performed badly except when _i_ make the mistake. :)
Now i'm looking to buy a new body, probably an EOS 30/33, but i will keep the 500N as a backup 2nd camera because it is so good i don't want to part with it.
I strongly recommend the 28-135mm USM IS lens; combined with the 500N; then you are ready for anything that comes at you... the original 28-80mm USM lens was a bit lame (bad lens flaring). Ignore all the bitching about plastic components by other reviewers; plastic makes the 500N cheaper and lightweight. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want metal rings, buy mid-pro bodies.

| Contra | plastik lens-mount: but if you donīt change the objectives thousand times a day it will do!
silver-coloured body scratches easily |
| Thoughts | Itīs my first SLR. I bought it second-hand with an Canon 28-105 USM objektive for only 225 EURO!(A+)
For me the best camera-set to start with.
Best quality photos taken. |

| Pro | Light weight, strong, not too expenisive yet higher quality than the Nikcons in the same price range, suitable for everyday photography and professional. |
| Contra | Plastic body scratches easy, Auto feactures make night photography harder than with the older Nikcons, feels a bit like a toy, not easy enought to get manual control of the cameria, but with time that gets better, |
| Thoughts | A very good all rounder, but could be better, but you get what you pay for, in general its as good as the 300 but as less pointless extras |

| Pro | ease-of-use, lightness, power-ful (for beginner) |

| Pro | easy operation, quick AF, fits well in my hand |
| Contra | lightweight plastic construction not very confidence-inspiring, no depth-of-field preview button, viewfinder kind of dark for manual focusing |
| Thoughts | If you want an SLR but plan to use it as a point-and-shoot most of the time, this is a decent one. If you want to learn serious photography though, you may outgrow it relatively quickly. |

| Pro | very good for what I do |
| Contra | . |
| Thoughts | So far for $270 (including standard lens) paid in 08/1997 this camera brought me very good quality pictures. I am not a professional photographer, but spoke with few and they told me this was a perfect buy. Now (06/2001) I bought SIGMA 70-210 f4.5-5.6 lens and I am ready. Overall, this camera is easy to use and takes very good pictures in it auto, program or manual modes. |

| Pro | Lightweight
Full featured
Ergonomics |
| Contra | Some functions a bit fiddly to get at and hard to remember how to do (particularly auto-bracketing) |
| Thoughts | Has anyone actually had problems with the plastic lens mount? If I did, at $150 or Ģ100 for the body (secondhand), or if I drop it, the things practically disposable anyway. Good kit, great value. Loads about at camera fairs in UK, mine was practically mint, so very replaceable. In five year's time I'll be writing this about the EOS 300! |

| Thoughts | I have one for three years. it is a cheap, no frill.high quality camera. I used it to make brochures pictures using the old type AF Steel mounted Cannon lense. Result is 8/10. I lately used tokina 28-70..much better.
For still life, scenery, travelling. its ok....but not for high speed photography.Nikkon 90x , or Cannon 5 does a better job.
no problem with quality on 500N. Light easy to carry around. Reproducable result. Good metering. |

| Thoughts | I don't like this camera. You can't manually select metering mode. Also, you can't select continuous AF and single AF manually. The mount is plasitc which makes me nervous when I use heavy lenses like EF70-200L. I dumped it finally and go for Nikon FE2. In my opinion, if you want to buy a EOS, the lowest model should be considered is EOS 50! |
