| Pro | Very solid camera, took it to beaches (sandy!!!), icy frosts, foggy rainforests & greenhouses, dusty places and whatever else...great camera, no troubles. About the battery: never had any troubles, guess around 80-100 (maybe more?) 36-films per battery. |
| Contra | Ai, oily shutter! No troubles with that here in Holland (not that hot...), but had some problems in summertime shooting dragonflies in full sun (but didn't know what happened). Last month in Mexico the real shit started, lost about 7 films. Found out about the oily shutter on the internet and tried to clean it with alcohol and toiletpaper. Look on both sides of the shutter, I had oil on the innerside and the outher(film)side as well. Be careful with cleaning, it's best done under higher (25-30 degrees) temperatures, because the oil will dissolve better. My camera fires as never before now! |
| Thoughts | Great camera, working with it for over three years now (after completing my AE-1). Secondhand goes for about 150-200 USdollars here, great value. |

| Pro | This is a very solid and reliable camera. Bought it used and kept it as a secondary body with an EOS 3. Mine has a dateback-E which is useful occasionally. |
| Contra | The glue under the rubberish grip of the original (non-dateback) back cover gave up. It was next to impossible to glue back again. |
| Thoughts | If you can get one, get it. |

| Pro | The 650 EOS is the best camera I have I'll never get another one in my life time, it takes excellent pictures all the time, and I do take lots of pictures, I also have the booklet that it came with, I bought it from a friend long time ago. It came wi th lots of stuff, on how to clean it and take care of it, I even got a bag with it, I bought a zoom lense for it but need more power, and they cost quite a bit for a really good one. Do you know where I can buy a really nice zoom lense? |
| Contra | I don't have any commet! But I do need a very nice Zoom lense for this one |

| Pro | Solid, reliable, good pics under most conditions. I agree with the weight being an advantage in hig winds |
| Contra | Have just begun experiencing the shutter rubber problem, meths seems to clear it up for the time being. Is there any long terms solution? I may just get an EOS 5 body if there is not, a new shutter set is too costly. |
| Thoughts | To Bob Snatcher - in the UK try www.mx2.com or www.photoglossy.com, 2CR5 batteries are about £2.10 each with a 1 off 99p per order post charge, fast delivery too. These are both Jesrey based and are very cheap for film, batteries etc. |

| Pro | In my opinion, this body is definitely the icon among auto focus cameras. |
| Contra | The shutter rubber melt down issue is a drag. Someone said below that the smears can be cleaned using methylated spirits. Anyone have any idea where to get some? Is this a reasonable solution, or just a wishful misery? Please, anybody, can you email me with insights or inexpensive long term solutions? [email protected] |
| Thoughts | It is so timeless, like a vintage sports car that can still outperform the state of the art coupes of our day. What a beautiful camera to hold. |

| Pro | Strong, Reliable, Good Features, Heavy |
| Contra | Eats batteries like anything |
| Thoughts | I bought this camera about a year ago for £150. It came with the standard 35-70mm lens. I've never looked back! Comparing it with almost any of Canon's newer cameras (EOS300, 500, 33, 30, 50, 3000 etc.)it certainly feels a lot stronger. This is a tank - I've knocked it, dropped it, stood on it, fell off mountains with it - won't stop working! Those of you who are thinking 'why has he put heavy weight as an advantage?', well, I take a lot of handheld mountain photographs in the mountains, where conditions are seldom favourable. A heavy camera is much more stable in high winds and therefore less camera shake is experienced. Overall, a superb camera which is unbelievably tough. Shame it eats through so many expensive 2CR5 batteries, though. |

| Pro | Great autofocus of a 15 year old camera. Its still faster than some new nikons. nice menu options in particular depth. sturdy construction that puts many new SLRs to shame. |
| Contra | no built-in flash, cant use cable release without special grip and the shutter-buffer rubbers eventually start to melt and spread greasy smears on the shutter itself. this jams the shutter half way and film becomes half exposed. my camera currnelty has this problem. however, rather than paying $200 australian to get new rubbers, i just clean the shutter with some methylated spirits each time before putting in the film. |
| Thoughts | overall great camera, especially for the price that they can be obtained second hand. |

| Pro | Great camera!! Before buying the 650 (1988) I had this famous CANON A1, which was already super for that time. had it for 10 years, sold it, and bought the EAS 650. The autofocus was a great step forward (the A1 was manual focus).
Just 7 months ago I decided to buy a SONY DSC-P1 digital camera, and since that moment my EOS-650 has been gathering dust in the closet. Pity!!
I bought the 650 for 2000 DM (included the standard 35-70 lens, and the 420-EZ flah unit).
Later, while living in Dubai (UAE), I bought a 300mm canon zoomlens, as I used it for shooting waterski action.
With tears in my eyes, just 1 week ago, I sold my beloved 650 (inclusing that 300mm extra lens) for the silly amount of 800 DM.
It never let me down, always worked, and I still think that my good old 650 hates me now, for selling her off. |
| Contra | Compare to the Minolta focussing system, I found a CANON focussing system a bit slow.
Especially when using the 300mm lens, I never understood why on earth the focussing system started focussing "in the wrong direction" and then came back from the end position to IN FOCUS position. |
| Thoughts | Hell of a great camera. I have dragged it all over the world, never failed on me.

| Pro | A great camera,I used mine for about 8 years normally coupled to a75-300f4-5.6 usm.It was good enough to get me into photo journalism in Japanese motorsport magazines whose photo standards are very high .Very tough and waterproof ,no pop up flash to let moisture in . |
| Contra | Autofocus is basic for Motorsport but good enough for most use, like wise bracketing |
| Thoughts | why any one buys exotic compacts when for about £250 in UK you can buy both camera and the above lens used. is beyond me.I replaced it with an EOS 3 and gave the 650 to my daughter. If I hadn't been taking shots of F1 cars I would not have bothered. |

| Pro | - Robust body, very strong
- You can get one for about $200
- Enough functionality for creative photography |
| Contra | - No warning if the battery is almost empty
|
| Thoughts | Someone I know, a world-traveler, has the same EOS650. He has used it all over the world for about ten years now. Dropped it a couple of times, used it while it was raining, but never had any problems with it. He shot beautiful photo's. I bought mine (including a 35-70) for only $225. I started to enjoy photography and bought second-hand 35-105 (canon), 19-35 (cosina) and 75-300 (canon) lenses, each for about $150. The camera works perfectly and has enough functions and possibilities for beginning and intermediate photographers. It was marketed in '87 and it's still one of the most popular SLR camera's there is... That says enough. |

| Thoughts | Well, in that case let me be the first to 'input'.
I recently acquired an EOS 650 from a family member - for free! I was not the
least bit interested in photography and knew (know!) even less. The state of my
knowledge is represented by the conviction that, as we all know, '650' of
anything has got to be better than '620' or '630' of the same thing. Well, in
the six weeks since I first got my new (to me at least) camera, and with the
aid of the internet, I have learned more about photography and the 35mm SLR
camera than I ever knew existed. And I have barely scratched the surface. It's
a whole new world to me! My EOS650 is as exciting to me as I suspect your EOS5
or EOS3 (another case where numeric magnitude is inverse to the value of the
actual product! What is it with these Canon camera label people?!) is to you
who are reading this note now. Anyhow, on to the results.
Without any user's manual, I searched old photo magazines for reviews of the
650. Found none but did find a review for the 620. (By this time I had a full
appreciation of the reverse numbering.) Using this data and some common sense,
I worked my way around the 650 and became familiar with its bells. (No whistles
or sirens on this aged machine - you have to 'advance' to a much 'lower' number to
get those.)
Oh yes, I understand that it's important to mention the lense details - or so
I've gleaned from all I've read. A 28-70mm, f3.5 - 4.5, "II", zoom lense
(marketed 06/88) came 'screwed' into the camera body, with a 75-300mm, f4-5.6,
USM, (marketed 06/92) thrown in - again for free. I have no idea what all this
equipment is worth and would appreciate some idea. (I have absolutely no
intention of parting with any of it. I'm having too much fun playing!)
Results: Both lenses functioned beautifully. The USM produced just a slight
humm on operation. I find the manual focus on the 28-70 lense a little tight
around the 50mm area. Any ideas why? I shot (God, I'm even starting to sound
like a buff!)two 36 rolls of Kodak Gold 200 asa. The pictures were beautiful and
very sharp. I shot the full range from 28 to 300mm (except for the 70-75mm gap.)
All photos were clear. I combined both AF and MF. I let the hardware choose the
shutter speed.
It's all still very new to me, and in my naivety, very exciting. I highly
reccomend the Canon EOS650 to anyone who is in a position to acquire one. I
understand they stopped making them in 1989, two years after they started. Pity! |
