ProSilent, drive, older cross type sensor are very fast, ligth, well designed, barcode programs, IR remote control works fine instead a cable release, great custom functions
ContraToo much polycarbonate on body, the grip are only for aestethycal purposes, no alternatives power suplies.
ThoughtsMy first "serius" camera and one of my favorites, still works fine after many yers of use, im still have the complete accesories even the barcode reader and the original RC-1 remote control....was my first EOS baby

ProTrustworthy, very good ergonomics and userinterface
ContraFlash sync is slow.
ThoughtsVery comfortable to use if having the additional handgrip, ergonomics is very good. I have used mine since 1993, with no problems, 20 000 pictures. When the 10D got available I moved to the digital one.

The lack of the better flash speed made taking pictures difficult, even the earlier body EOS 620 got speed 1/250.

Even as a used body, it could be worth of getting one, if you are using still film.

ProI picked this camera three years ago for around $225US. It's now 14 years old and is still performing beautifully. Until I went digital it was my primary camera, however it still gets used regularly. I have never needed to have it serviced. It's comfortable to hold, and fairly light. It's very quiet. The command dial on the 100/Elan appears durable and tough, moreso than other EOS models. As stated, my camera is 14 years old, and the LCD is perfect, no degredation or missing information. I use Ilford SFX 200 infrared film and a Hoya R72 filter on this camera with great results - no sprocket light leakage.
ContraI have the international EOS 100, where the flash annoyingly pops up automatically in all Image Zone/PIC modes.
ThoughtsI have just bought a Canon EOS 20D, but if I ever see another used EOS Elan/100 in good condition, I would buy it again in a heartbeat. :)

ProLovely camera with good 3-4fps shots. Quiet as a mouse. Easy to use I got used to it in a couple of days and I aint no pro. Buttons are in easy to reach places. Good all rounder.
ContraBar code reader is a gimmick that is pretty bad. The only other thing I wished it had was room for the booster to speed up the shots per second to something like the EOS1 with booster.
ThoughtsLooks like i will have to save up for the EOS1. check some of my photos out at http://www.streetphire.co.uk/photos/photos_h.htm thats some of them. The further down the more recent.

ProFast single-shot AF, zoom flash that does the job more than adequately, quiet operation, quick dial.
ContraSlow AI servo, somehow shutter does not release easily when in AI servo mode.
ThoughtsI bought this used camera recently in Jul 2001 after having "played" with the EOS 5000 (888) for 5 yrs. Finally got exposure compensation and Aperture Priority! It is a good body overall, good heft (unlike the plastic bodied 5000 which was too light) and coupled with my Canon 50mm MKII prime and a Tokina 20-35 mm wideangle, it covers my shooting needs terrifically. While many others may say the film transport mechanism is very quiet, I can't say I have experienced this. The film transport and mirror 'clack' sounds the same as the 5000, to me. Ahh, perhaps I haven't heard the clunkers of the EOS 3 or EOS 1s yet. But nevertheless, as one of the other reviewers here have said, it's a marvel on the used market. =)

ProQuiet Shutter & film advance.
Fast AF
Abundance of functions for creative photography
Robust build
ContraNo film leader out function
ThoughtsI've had my camera since 1992 and not had any problems with it, although the program selection dial is getting a bit sticky now. One of my major reasons for purchasing this model was that it fitted my hand perfectly, and once I got used to the location of the shutter release, all of its functions were easy to access. After trying some of the current models, I'm now aware of the weight of this model, but there again, it is a lot more robust than the current light-weights. Hope I don't have to replace this camera for a long time.

Thoughts I love this most quiet EOS camera. I have used it extensively
since 1995. And have serviced it twice. Once for a fault causing
the shutter not able to be depressed. Another time for oil stains
at the shutter blades (common problem).
The built in flash is useful for situations where you don't want
to lug a hotshoe flash along.
If only they could have added a custom function F4
(as in EOS 5,50,1n etc) and film leader out function ... :)

ThoughtsI love this camera, I've shot 2000+ rolls witih and have yet to have a problem. I've lost the owner's manual, would anyone have a copy of it that they could transmit over e-mail? I don't want to pay money to get another. Cheers--Matt

ThoughtsI've had the camera for seven+ years, and it has always taken great photos. Even now it could be a good second hand purchase. Traps include a fairly narrow AF area, which is no problem for me, but give it to compact camera users and you can get out of focus pictures. Also lacks ability to flip to predictive autofocus automatically.

ThoughtsI purchased the EOS 100 secondhand for £164 UK Pounds, Prices seem to be around the £170 to £200 mark in the UK.

Can not fault the camera at all. I think that this must have one of the quitest motor drives around, great for wildlife work.

Predictive Autofocus on the 50E I think is perhaps a little better. but then it is a newer model.

I use mainly black and white in the 100 and colour in the 50E (makes life easier) As a second or backup body, buy one.

ThoughtsI had this camera for six years now. Although I have added two more bodies to my Canon system, this one is still the one I used the most. It is very very reliable, I have used this camera for about 500 rolls and I have never encountered any problem. It is extremely quiet, the quietest SLR I have ever used. My complains: slow AF speed in low light even with L lenses, no way to shoot flash over 1/125.

ThoughtsIt's great camera. I own EOS Elan for 7 years, and I have never had any troubles with it. I've used it very intensively most of this time and I always could count on my Elan. It's quiet, easy to use and comfortable to hold. I've never been unhappy with its just one AF sensor I always know where the focus is! The most used modes are: P, M, sometimes DEP. I wanted to change to a newer model, but there always have been some reasons to stay with Elan. Jacek

ThoughtsYes, this camera is quiet. I've used it for photographing weddings and the belt drive is great. For a camera so old, it still does a great job 80% of the time. I've never bothered with AI servo (never very good), only One Shot. Lack of cable release is a pain. I've always found the PIC modes (landscape, portrait, sport) a complete waste of time. Speed dial on body is fantastic. Easy to quickly dial in compensation. Flash compensation is useless as it only works with the built-in flash, which is too small for most applications. I purchased the grip but it doesn't have a tripod socket on the base so I have to unscrew it to use a tripod. The camera body is a good shape to use, and the dials have been well thought out. Overall, it has served its purpose well.

ThoughtsI own the EOS 100 for now 7 years and still be very happy with it. It is absolute quiet (haven't found better), and reliable even at -35°C. My only complain is about the AF accuracy at one shot. I use fast lens and every time make 2 to 3 AF check to be sure that the subject is tack sharp. The AI servo and AF tracking give poor results, but the technology is a little old... An other think that Canon forgot: there is no cable release connector!!!??!!! Only the small IR RC-1. It is really a pity no to be able to use a cable release electric or mechanical. Ok that's all, still a good body.

ThoughtsThis camera is probably the most silent motorized AF camera to date. Even its successor (EOS 50) is noisier though still quite by normal standards. Thanks to the central AF cross sensor it perfroms still good. The ergonomic design is great though I would like to have an extra button for DOF preview instead of a single multiple function button on the rear. It is certainly a better choice to buy a used EOS 100 than a new Rebel 2000. Also a great backup body.
